Hiking in a birch forest brings an almost magical feeling of peace and serenity. Birch is one of six types of trees that grow in the Alaskan's polar boreal forest (also known as taiga). This snowy northern forest biome is named after the Greek god of the North Wind, Boreas and covers swaths of Canada, Scandinavia, and Siberia.
